When Does a Car Donation Make Sense?
A car donation may be one of the best types of donations you can give. Vehicles are expensive and they often require a good amount of maintenance and upkeep. They also are critical to working a job and being able to support a family. If you have a vehicle sitting around, costing you money, why not donate it. Not only are you able to help a person who is in need, but you also are able to get a tax deduction for your donation as well, assuming you donate it to an IRS recognized nonprofit organization. There are some situations when it just makes sense to donate like this.
A car donation is a good idea when you just do not need the vehicle any longer and can afford to give it up. For example, if you have a vehicle sitting in your driveway that is not used, you can actually save yourself money by donating the vehicle so you can stop paying car insurance on it. If you have a vehicle that is in good condition but may need expensive repairs, many charities will still accept it. They can have local providers and volunteers fix the vehicle so that it can be sold to the public. You may just want to do a good deed. If you are buying a new vehicle and the trade in value of the current vehicle is too low, donate it instead so you can get the tax break.
It makes sense to make a car donation in any of these situations. As you look at all of your options, remember to consider all of those charitable organizations that are important to you. This may include your local church, national organization or a veteran's charity, for example. Be sure to get a receipt for your donation, too.
